Don't you wish you were clever sometimes?

So I sent a company wide email to everyone stating
"Someone left a pair of glasses in Conference room 527 please come and get them if they are yours."

The CFO promptly writes back:
"If one of them has red wine in it ... I call dibs."

Sometimes I wish I was [were?] clever.

That's awesome! Go, CFO!

You ARE clever, my dear. You are, after all, related to yours truly. Here's proof you bring out the cleverosity in me. http://mcwriter.wordpress.com/2007/10/16/because-i-think-i%e2%80%99m-clever/

And it's "were" - subjunctive. If an event or instance could happen, but is not necessarily going to - that's subjunctive. Also - an easy shortcut - when you write "wish", it's almost ALWAYS followed by the subjunctive.
